983 Yd’s of Total Offense….Catholic BR vs Woodlawn BR – R/L Game of the Week

After a season of up and downs for high school football in Louisiana due to Covid-19 and then an announcement, by the LHSAA, that teams had to play at least 4 games to be playoff eligible, several teams found themselves looking at their rankings and looking for games in order to become eligible or raise their ranking to make the playoffs in Week 8 of the season.

One such team was the Woodlawn Panthers from Baton Rouge.  The Panthers came into Week 8 of the regular season only playing 3 games due to battling Covid-19 issues.  They were currently 2-1, recording wins against District opponents Dutchtown and St. Amant.

Earlier in the season Woodlawn was forced to cancel their district matchup with the Catholic High of Baton Rouge due to Covid-19.

Catholic High Baton Rouge, who had managed to escape team issues with Covid-19, found themselves needing an opponent since they were scheduled to play district opponent Dutchtown.  Dutchtown had to cancel the game with the Catholic Bears due to Covid-19 issues on the Griffins team.

Now the table was set for a rescheduling of the earlier cancelled district game, one that would test both teams and their young squads prior to the playoffs.

Catholic would be starting the freshman quarterback Daniel Beale, who came in the previous week after starter Landon O’Connor went out of the game due to injury.  Beale stood tall in the pocket and delivered a win against the Acadiana Wreckin’ Rams the week before.  Would he be able to continue to command the offense and deliver strikes in the passing game for the Bears against the Panthers.

Back that up with one of the best groups of running backs, a talented receiving core, and an extremely stingy defense for the Bears.  Needless to say, Catholic has one of the best recipes of talent in all three phases of the game to create a winning culture throughout the football program during the 2020 season.

Woodlawn would start one of the most promising and talented quarterbacks in the district, as well as the state.  Sophomore Rickie Collins has caught the eyes of many college coaches as he has shown to be a proficient, well coached quarterback that poses a strong arm and pinpoint accuracy on his throws.

Collins has a young but very talented wide receiver core to work with.  This group of receivers just find a way to make a play, whether they are passes in tight windows or the long ball.  Any opportunity on the field they get to showcase their talent and skill set they step up to the challenge,

Let’s no forget the junior running back Amani Givens.  Givens gives the needed combination of downhill running and the ability to come out of the backfield or the slot on pass plays that is needed to keep opposing teams off balance defensively.  Givens is a hard runner that barrels his way through the line, ponding opposing defenses and opposing tacklers. He possesses a quick burst of speed and acceleration, along with the ability to make quick cuts that creates miss tackles on first contact.

Senior Lanard Harris (who plays both sides of the ball) gets behind the defenders and catches the pass from Collins. 42 Yards in the end zone and Woodlawn continues to fight and cuts into the Bears lead with 1:09 left in the game. 27-34 Catholic BR
