The 2021 LHSAA Football Season is officially underway as football teams around the State of Louisiana began their respective Jamborees.
One of the largest in the Baton Rouge area was held Friday Night at Memorial Stadium. The Red Stick Rumble included four teams – The Parkview Baptist Eagles, The St. Michael Warriors, The Catholic High Baton Rouge Bears, and The University High Cubs.
Parkview Baptist and St. Michael started off the evening at Memorial, followed up by the Catholic High Bears vs. the University High (U-High) Cubs in the night cap.
The first game saw Parkview Baptist dominate the Warriors to win 18-0.
Parkview previewed two quarterbacks during their game. Both senior quarterbacks, Kade Pearl and Nate Goza played a half and accounted for a total of 8 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown. Pearl was 5-8 for 82 yards, with a 18 yard touchdown pass to Micah Johnson (#2 Junior WR/OLB/S 6’2″ 215). Pearl also scrambled for a two point conversion. Goza was 3-5 for 73 yards.
Micah Johnson, who plays both sides of the ball for the Eagles, offensively had two receptions for 45 yards and Gabe Mitchell (#13 Senior WR) add two receptions for 41 yards.
Brant Yarbrough added to Parkview’s dominate night, when he took the handoff and darted down the right sideline, avoiding tacklers, for a 45 yard touchdown run.
Gavin Hebert led the way for the Warriors defensively with 2 tackles and a sack for a 12 yard loss.
In the second game, Catholic High fell behind in the first half to the Cubs.
University High struck first on a 32 yard field goal by Wils Melton. They added to their lead in the first half when Hudson Osborne hit Jason Barnes for a 14 yard strike across the middle, that Barnes took into the endzone for a touchdown (10-0 Cubs 5:12 Left in first half).
Catholic came back with a touchdown with just 49 seconds left in the first half, as Daniel Beale found a wide open Bradley Wright in the endzone to cut the Cubs lead to 10-7.
The Bears showed their resilience in the second half and mounted an offensive running attack that wore down the Cubs defense.
Defensively, the Bears took control and held the Cubs to under 160 total yards of offense and shut down the passing attack almost completely.
The defense was lead by #56 Harold Lawson. Lawson lead the Bear defense with 4 Tackles, .5 TFL. Benji Gordon and Jack Massey each recorded 3 tackles. Massey added an interception to his stats, when he picked off an Osborne pass late in the second half.
Offensively, the Bears used a combination of running plays between four different running backs, as well as, the burst of speed at receiver positions from a mix of running back/athletes, called the *T and T connection.
Daniel Beale, starting quarterback for the Bears, threw for two completions (which were also the two touchdowns) during the night for the Bears. One completion to Bradley Wright for 25 yards out, and the other to Lloyd “Tre” Benson III for a 36yd catch and run.
