It was set to be the biggest game in Louisiana and covered by ESPN2 as a High School Friday Night Football (FNF) Game.
The highlight of the night, the LSU Commit Aaron Anderson who totaled over 290 yards on the night. Anderson scored all three of his touchdowns on special teams as the Cougars take the win over the Patriots 33-19. (238 yards on special teams – 60 yard free kick, 90 yard KR, 88 yard PR)
“He is just that good and that fast. He is a quick and strong player. Give him and Karr all the credit. He is able to accelerate through the smallest holes.” stated Patriots Head Coach J.T. Curtis speaking about Karr’s Aaron Anderson
Even as parents, coaches, and players of both teams were continuing to deal with the remnants of Hurricane Ida, the Edna Karr Cougars did not let that bother them as they came out clicking on all cylinders.
“Samuel is coming off injury but he has been doing a great job on his check downs. To hold JC to less than 50 yards in the first half is awesome. That is a testament to our guys buying in to the defensive scheme.” – stated Head Coach Brice Brown at halftime.
Using a balanced offensive approach, Karr used a combination of quarterbacks, the run game, and the passing game to keep the Patriots defense in check. A.J. Samuel showed he was ready to be back on the field after dealing with a lingering injury. Samuel connected with Yarun McMath (younger brother of Racey McMath) on a touchdown in the first half. Samuel also ran for a touchdown.
Karr’s defense just stimmed John Curtis’ veer offense. Patriots found it hard to move the ball down the field in the first half. Big plays by Tygee Hill, Cam Jones (sack) and Jonathan Bax (Junior defensive end contributed with a big tackle in the endzone that lead to a Safety, forced fumble) kept the pressure on the Patriots all night.
John Curtis’ defensive showed their own grit lead by junior linebacker Austin Ackel (6’3″ 200), Connor Orgeron, and Shavon Lee.
John Curtis offense saw glimpse of success against the tough Karr defense in the second half with explosive plays from their senior quarterback Buddy Taylor who scored two touchdown with his legs (47 yard run, 59 yard run) and was able to connect with his receivers for big gains. Taylor finished the night with 191 yards rushing on 18 carries, 87 yards passing.
Patrick LeBranch, the swiss army knife for Curtis, made big plays on both special teams and offense for the Patriots, as well as, sophomore wide receiver Michael Turner (3 catches, 87 yards receiving), who on 3rd and 23, took a Taylor pass 43 yards to score for the Patriots with less than three minutes left in the game.
