Louisiana Sport Writers Association Announces Class 5A All-State Team

The Zachary Bronco’s finished off a 15-0 season in route to becoming the Class 5A State Champions.  It was their first undefeated season and their fourth title in the last eight years.

Zachary quarterback Eli Holstein, a Texas A & M Commit and four-star by 247sports.com, was voted the Outstanding Offensive Player on the LSWA’s Class 5A All-State team. Holstein completed 204 of 313 passes for 3,228 yards, 30 touchdowns and six interceptions as a junior. He rushed 66 times for 523 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Head Coach David Brewerton, of the Zachary Broncos, was selected as the Coach of the Year. Brewerton celebrated is fourth title as head coach of the Broncos.

Ponchatoula’s five-star ATH Jacoby Mathews was selected as the LSWA Class 5A Outstanding Defensive Player. Mathews was an impact player in all three phases for Ponchatoula, including 51 tackles, 14 pass breakups, three fumble recoveries and two defensive touchdowns. He also returned two punts for touchdowns and caught 10 passes for 121 yards and three scores.

The Zachary Broncos and the Catholic High Bears (Division 1 State Champions) topped the honors with six total players from the Baton Rouge area receiving 5A All State Honors.

LSU signee Emery Jones earned all-state honors for the second time as an offensive lineman for Catholic High Bears, teammate Jermaine Vessell received all state honors as a defensive lineman and Kylin Dupre as the punter.

Woodlawn Baton Rouge’s Rickie Collins received All State Honors listed as the athlete on the team.
