It was set up to be one of the biggest games in Louisiana. It was the biggest game for sure in South Louisiana, as the St. Thomas More Cougars rolled into Baton Rouge to take on the Catholic High Bears at Memorial Stadium Friday Night.
Just to name a few of the great moments, records were broken, over 1000 yards of total offense for both sides, and running backs tallied up almost 300 yards rushing and that was just a part of the overall game. It was a barn burner from the first whistle to the 4th quarter when Catholic seemed to find its footing both offensively and defensively to propel themselves it the lead and maintain it for the win.
Junior Running Back Barry Remo Jr.
Offensive players of the game, junior running back Barry Remo Jr. and senior wide receiver Shelton Sampson both had outstanding nights for the Bears. Remo ran for 293 of Catholic 425 yards rushing. Shelton, an LSU Commit, would break the 30 year old record for most receiving yards with 1,750 yards in his career. The record was previously was set is 1992 by former Bear, Kevin Ainsworth. The LSU Commit also caught 10 passes for 132 yards on the night for the Bears.
Defensive Players of the game would have to go to the entire Catholic High Bear Defense, who shut out the Cougars in the second half. The Bears created fumble opportunities that turned the ball back over to their offensive to become scoring opportunities, as well as, timely stops to force the Cougars to punt on 4th down.
The game started as a shoot out with both teams scoring on offensive possessions. By halftime St. Thomas More held a one touchdown lead 28-21. The Cougars used a two quarterback system with junior quarterback Sam Altmann and junior quarterback Will Taylor. Altmann accounted for three of the Cougars touchdowns in the first half. He passed for 233 yards. Both quarterbacks showed strong arms. Altmann’s throwing accuracy, finding open targets, and command of the field in the first half was very impressive.
Junior running back, Hutch Swilley, would be the main ball carrier for the Cougars. The 5’11” 200 pound junior would punish the Bears defense as he pounded his way down the field in the first half.
The Cougars would take a seven point lead into halftime, but the Bears would come out in the second and dominate both defensively and offensively. Remo would scamper in for a go ahead touchdown with 11:54 left in the game to put the Bears in the lead 35-28. At the 10:07 mark left in the game, Catholic would force a fumble and recover at the 48 yard line. Remo would add another touchdown, this one from 73 yards out with 4:53 left in the game to push the lead to 49-28 Bears (3-1) and the final score of the game.
Just A Note: Watch out for the up and coming running backs for Catholic High, one freshman, 2 sophomores, and a junior. The Bears have always been known to produce top running backs in the state. Sophomore Rylan Parker put his mark on this game as he rushed for two touchdowns on the night, including the touchdown that tied the game up in the third quarter at 28 all.
Shelton Sampson on breaking the receiving record at Catholic High, “It means everything. I didn’t even know I was close to the record. I didn’t even think about the record until they announced it and the crowd went crazy. I am very thankful to my team, my coaches, my family, the fans.”
