Lights, Camera, Action – Denham Springs Celebrates First Night in new stadium hosting the Walker Wildcats

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

Lights, Camera, Action was the statement for the Denham Springs Yellow Jackets as they took the field for their first night at their new stadium.

Rain could not damper the fireworks, the stands full of Yellow Jacket faithful, and the excitement of the players and coaching staff.  A long wait, watching the stadium being built during the summer and the first 9 weeks of the football season, led to a Week 10 District contest between rivals as Denham played host to the Walker Wildcats.  With a win, the Yellow Jackets would clinch the 5-5A District Title

How it was won:

Walker struggled offensively at times with the snap from center that lead to three safeties.  The Yellow Jackets defense would be smothering all night as they accounted for 6 sacks on the night.  Senior defensive lineman, Porter Gibson accounted for two of those sacks.

The first touchdown in the new stadium would be a rushing touchdown by senior running back Raydrian McKneely with 6:09 left in the first half to bring the score to 0-9 Denham Springs. That would also be the halftime score as the Wildcats would intercept Mooney’s pass at the one yard line and let the clock run down to end the first half.

The snap bug would get the Wildcats again with 4:12 left in the 3rd quarter as the ball would go over Sylvie’s head and into the endzone for another safety.  Denham Springs lead would move to 11-0.

The Wildcats would finally punch one into the endzone in the 4th quarter, as sophomore quarterback Sylvie would take the ball on a quarterback keep and rumble into the endzone on a 4th down and 3.  (6:48 left in the 4th Score: 11-6 Denham Springs)

Walker defense stiffened up on the next Yellow Jacket possession and stopped Denham short on 4th down, taking over on downs.  Looking to mount an offensive series to possibly tie up the score, the snap bug would raise it ugly head again.  Again the snap would sail over Sylvie’s head and into roll into the endzone where it Sylvie would be tackled for the third safety of the night.  (2:32 left in the 4th Score: 13-6 Denham Springs)

Walker would go for the onside kick which would be recovered by Denham Springs. On the first play after the onside kick, Raydrian McKneely would take the handoff and rumble down the field for a Yellowjacket Touchdown with 2:27 left in the game and moving the score to 20-6 Denham Springs.

Denham Yellow Jackets move to 8-2 on the season and 4-1 District for the regular season and look to host in the first round of the LHSAA Playoffs.

Walker moves to 6-4 on the season and 2-3 in District for the regular season.
