Friday Night Light’s Week 8 – Big 4-5A District Showdown Zachary Broncos host Central Wildcats

Game Highlights:

Old school toughness and new era head coaches were on display Friday night as the Zachary Broncos hosted the Central Wildcats in a 4-5A District showdown at the Bronco Corral.

It was like old times with both stands filled to capacity, bands playing at their highest volume, coaches strategizing to outwit the coaches opposite them, and players leaving everything on the field for four quarters.

Central was the first to strike, with 42 seconds left in the first quarter, as Damon Blocker would take the handoff and fight to get to the goal line, just stretching out the ball to break the plane of the endzone.

It didn’t take long for the Broncos to answer as LSU Commit Trey’dez Green would run a simple slant route and Hudson Spangler would find him wide open across the middle.  Green would do the rest as he scampered to the endzone on a pass/catch 88 yard touchdown to tie up the game at 7.

Central would add a field goal to go back in the lead 10-7, but on the ensuing kickoff the Broncos would answer again as Tyson George would take the kickoff and find a huge hole up field and he was off to the races and the endzone for a 88 yard return.  Zachary was back in the lead 14-10 with 4:28 left in the first half.

Central wasn’t done yet and marched right down the field.  With 51 seconds left in the first half, Jackson Firmin would find his big time target, tight end Adyn Wilkinson, for a Wildcat Touchdown to bring the score to 16-14.  That would be the score going into halftime.

Zachary would get the ball to start the second half.  They continued to set the tone marching down the field and ended the drive with a handoff and touchdown by Kameron Thomas to take the lead 21-14 at the 9:06 mark of the third quarter.  Central would try to answer but had to settle for a field goal, but closed the Bronco lead to 19-21. with 4:39 left in the third quarter.

The end of the third quarter, Central was on the move down field and inside the 20.  At 11:53 mark of the fourth quarter, Jackson Firmin would throw a strike to a diving Keithon Womack at the edge of the goal line, Touchdown Wildcats!!  The Wildcats would jump back into the lead 25-21.  The fireworks continued offensively for both teams as Zachary’s running back Kameron Thomas would find a crease and explode through the hole to scamper to the endzone to put the Broncos back in the lead 28-25 with 10:06 left in the game.

To say we had made it to track meet status would be an understatement.  Both teams defense would make pivotal stands but Central would find themselves with a chance to get into the endzone with under 5 minutes left in the game.  The Broncos defense however held the Wildcats to a field goal try.  41 yard field goal would be good by Womack and Central had tied up the game at 28 all, with 4:18 left in the game.

It seemed there was a chance for the game to go into overtime,  but not quite so fast as Zachary’s running back, Kameron Thomas, would find a wide open lane off left tackle and bolt for 29 yards to find the endzone.  This would propel the Broncos into the lead, 35-28 with 1:02 left in the game. Thomas would finish the night with 19 carries for over 200 yards and three touchdown.  With his hardnose running style and never say die attitude with the ball in his hands, Thomas would take our Player Of The Game for Week 8 Friday Night Light’s – Game Of The Week.

From there the dancing would start in Zachary and the final score would be 35-28, the Zachary Broncos.  Zachary will move to 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in 4-5A District Play.  This should also set up a major 4-5A showdown in two weeks between the Zachary Broncos and the Catholic High Bears for the District Championship.

For Central, junior quarter back Jackson Firmin would finish the night with 187 yards passing and 2 touchdowns, and senior running back/athlete Damon Blocker would display his hard running style totaling up 156 yards on 17 Carries and one touchdown.

When these two teams meet it will always be a battle on the football field.  Both teams played extremely hard and found a way to make the big plays when they needed them.  Tonight Zachary just made one more big play at the end and that would lead to them to taking home the win!
