Friday Night Lights Week 5 – Zachary Broncos host 4A State Champion Opelousas Tigers

It was Homecoming for Zachary and the rain had cleared for the evening, or at least everyone thought it had.

The battle between 5A Zachary Broncos and the 4A State Champions Opelousas Tigers would see its fair share of down pours as both teams battled defensively.  At the half neither team had been able to score due to the valiant efforts of defensive plays that included block punts, one block field goal, fumbles, and interceptions.

The first points were not even scored until the 3:07 mark of the 3rd quarter when Rafael Costa punched in a 21 yard field goal try to move the score to 3-0 Broncos. Opelousas would answer right back when 3-star RB D’Shaun Ford would take the handoff and scamper 78 yards for the lone touchdown of the night for the visiting Tigers, bringing the score to 6-3 Tigers.

After that the Broncos didn’t look back using some explosive pass plays (Cockerham – 5 recs 71 yards) and the running combination of #22 Nate James (15 carries, 52 yards) and #14 Davekio Ruffin (11 carries, 38 yards, 2 TD’s) to move the ball offensively to score 21 unanswered points.

The final score was 24-6. The Broncos move to 3-1 on the year and move on to district play next week against Scotlandville.
