Senior CB Donald Jones Takes INT 103 Yds For Pick 6 As Hornets Win Nailbiter Against Captain Shreve

“It was a great game by two great teams. They (Captain Shreve) have a really great team and program,” Coach Lester Ricard Head Coach of the Scotlandville Hornets stated.

It was a battle between two undefeated teams and it had every aspect of a great game you could want.  A comeback win, last second touchdowns, final seconds ticking off with both teams fighting for possession of the football, forced fumbles, fierce defensive battles, and explosive plays both on offense and defense (interception taken 3 yards deep into the endzone and run back for a Pic 6 = 103 Yards).  It was intense and no one was leaving their seats until the last second ticked off the clock.

Offensively the Hornets were led by Senior QB Jesse Craig who used a well rounded attack in the second half to get points on the board including a 20 yard scramble with 11:07 left in the game to put the Hornets up 27-20.  2022 RB Chance Williams lead the Hornets rushing attack with 94 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown.

Defensively the Hornets forced 4 fumbles and 4 interceptions. Senior corner had himself a game with two of the interceptions, one being a 103 yard pick six in the second half.

The Hornets trailed 12-0 at halftime of the game. Much needed adjustments and pure grit brought the Hornets back as Craig would hand off to Senior SB/WR Jeremiah Harris on a sweep around the left side.  Harris streaked into the endzone giving the Hornets their first lead of the game 13-12 with 6:12 left in the third quarter.

The Hornets looked to be taking control of the game as Senior QB Jessie Craig ran in to the endzone on a quarterback keep to give the Hornets a 20-12 lead with 2:17 left in the 3rd Qtr. But the Gators came storming back lead by Senior QB Darrius Grant, Senior RB DJ Fleming, and Sophomore WR Kenderick Law  to tie the game up again at 20 all.

There was no doubt that the feeling in the air was this was going to be an exciting finish and a battle until the clock struck zero.

With 11:07 Left in the game the Hornets went for it on 4th and Goal. Sophomore RB Chance Williams was not going to be denied as he barreled his way into the endzone to put the Hornets back on top 27-20.

After both defensive’s forced punts, Captain Shreve would answer with :45 seconds left in the game as Senior RB DJ Fleming took the hand-off and broke several tackles as he scrambled into the endzone to bring the Gators to within one pending the extra point.  There seemed to be some confusion at the snap of the ball on the extra point and the kick sailed wide right leaving the score 27-26 Hornets.

Gators went for the onside kick and recovered the ball but the Hornets defensive made one more outstanding defensive play as Grant’s pass was tipped and Senior corner Chris Daigre intercepted the ball (his second interception on the night) to give the Hornets offense back the ball so they could run out the clock.
